Further protest this Saturday about the government’s plan to make further drastic cuts to welfare benefits
  • Date and time: this Saturday, 7th June, from 12 noon to 4pm
  • Organisers: the  People’s Assembly  (The protest will include disabled people and also be wider)
  • What action is planned and where it will be:  The protest will start with speeches, music and a big screen video at Portland Place (London W1B IPR)  Protesters will then march to Whitehall.
If you can come, even for part of the time, please can you email me. Then I can let you know where at Portland Place you can get together with other Liberation supporters – and how to identify me if you’ve never met me directly.

ALSO Creative items still needed for Liberation’s campaign against the Mental Health Bill

Urgently needed – creative items for the briefing due to be sent to MPs. This will express continuing concerns about how discriminatory the Mental Health Bill is. The four issues we’re particularly focusing on are:
  • The government’s mistaken assumption that risk issues need to be addressed by detaining us against our will in psychiatric hospitals and forcibly treating us. As the World Health Organisation has clearly stated, there is no adequate research evidence that these forms of coercion even work, whereas there is clear evidence of trauma they cause us and of deaths amongst us
  • The unequal rights the Bill continues to give us, because of mistaken government assumptions about how to handle risk
  • The ways in which the Bill continues to lag badly behind countries making genuine progress towards the Convention on the Rights of Disabled People (CRPD). Contrary to the government’s assertions, it is very far from being a Bill now ‘fit for the 21st century’
  • The government’s continuing failure to give a meaningful influence to those of us with lived experience who are campaigning for the full human rights we should have under the CRPD.
A big thank you to people who have already sent contributions.

Still urgently needed:
  • Short video clips you can put together on one or more of the 4 points above, lasting not more than 3 minutes
  • Cartoons/pictures which illustrate these points.
If you can help, it will be brilliant.

Deadline now: The end of this weekend, i.e. Sunday 8th June (or Monday morning at very latest).

With many thanks

MITUK’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for fundamentally re-thinking theory and practice in the field of mental health in the UK, and promoting positive change. We believe that the current diagnostically-based paradigm of care has comprehensively failed, and that the future lies in non-medical alternatives which explicitly acknowledge the causal role of social and relational conflicts, abuses, adversities and injustices.
