The Workshop

The Buteyko breathing method, by promoting nasal breathing and reducing hyperventilation, can be life-changing for individuals struggling with a variety of experiences ranging from anxiety to sleep problems. Many report significant improvements in their overall well-being, experiencing better energy levels, reduced ‘symptoms’, and a greater sense of control over their life and health.

In this workshop participants will learn the basics of the Buteyko breathing method to help themselves and the people they support.

Retired GP Venetia Young will introduce us to the stress flowchart and the patients who helped in its construction. We will learn about the health consequences of over breathing (hyperventilation) and its effect of too low a concentration of carbon dioxide on brain and cellular function. Participants will have an opportunity to practice and compare several breath techniques and will learn about magnesium deficiency caused by hyperventilation and much more! There will be a handout that participants can use with those they are supporting.

MITUK’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for fundamentally re-thinking theory and practice in the field of mental health in the UK, and promoting positive change. We believe that the current diagnostically-based paradigm of care has comprehensively failed, and that the future lies in non-medical alternatives which explicitly acknowledge the causal role of social and relational conflicts, abuses, adversities and injustices.
