On Tuesday, June 13 at 3 p.m. from New York, the first Regional Madness Report will be presented at the 16th Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, known as COSP.

The Regional Insanity Report invites reflection on “Mad Justice and Reparation” in relation to the particular situation of people who suffered abuse, malpractice and torture by mental health systems. This report is the result of research that analyzed the situation of laws, policies and practices in 10 Latin American countries regarding the rights of neurodivergent or psychosocially disabled people. It details systematic practices of discrimination and exclusion against these groups and highlights good self-managed practices.

The report has been prepared by “RedEsfera”, an organization that works in Latin America for the promotion of Mad Cultures, Psychosocial Diversity, Justice, Good Living and the Right to Delirium. It is self-managed by people with first-person experience from several countries. Since 2018, they have been working on a voluntary basis to defend the fundamental rights of the broad collective popularly known as “crazy people”.

The “RedEsfera” will present the Regional Report on Madness, called “For Mad Justice and Reparation”, as part of a COSP side event and virtually.

The event will include the participation of Alejandra Alvarez (Bolivia), Lorena Berrios (Chile), Victor Lizama (Mexico), Alan Robinson (Argentina) and Alberto Vasquez (Peru). The event will be opened by Carlos Ríos Espinosa of the international organization “Human Rights Watch” and will be closed by a representative of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The activity is organized jointly with Red Orgullo Loco Mexico, Movimiento en Defensa de Nuestra Salud Mental de Chile and Sociedad y Discapacidad – SODIS.

The virtual meeting is free to attend and will offer Spanish-English interpretation, international sign language interpretation, as well as live subtitling in Spanish and English.
